Students preparing for courses in real analysis often encounter either very exacting theoretical treatments or books without enough rigor to stimulate an in-depth understanding of the subject. Further complicating this, the field has not changed much over the past 150 years, prompting few authors to address the lackluster or overly complex dichotomy existing among the available texts. The enormously popular first edition of Real Analysis and Foundations gave students the appropriate combination of authority, rigor, and readability that made the topic accessible while retaining the strict discourse necessary to advance their understanding. The second edition maintains this feature while further integrating new concepts built on Fourier analysis and ideas about wavelets to indicate their application to the theory of signal processing. The author also introduces relevance to the material and surpasses a purely theoretical treatment by emphasizing the applications of real analysis to concrete engineering problems in higher dimensions. Expanded and updated, this text continues to build upon the foundations of real analysis to present novel applications to ordinary and partial differential equations, elliptic boundary value problems on the disc, and multivariable analysis. These qualities, along with more figures, streamlined proofs, and revamped exercises make this an even more lively and vital text than the popular first edition.

Pragmatism without Foundations 2nd ed

Reconciling Realism and Relativism

In this remarkable book, Joseph Margolis, one of America's leading and most celebrated philosophers, examines the relationship between two apparently contradictory philosophical tendencies - realism and relativism. In order to examine the relationship between the two, Margolis establishes a taxomony of different kinds of realism and different kinds of relativism. Drawing on both the analytic and Continental traditions, he examines (from a pragmatic point of view) the various relationships between these two tendencies in the light of two major developments in modern philosophy - the concern for praxis and the concern for historicity. Twenty years after it was first published to great acclaim, Margolis has updated Pragmatism Without Foundations in the light of his most recent work and the development of pragmatism in the intellectual world. This second edition includes an updated preface and a brand new epilogue addressing these developments and their implications for his earlier work.

Ideal for undergraduates of geotechnical engineering for civil engineers, this established textbook sets out the basic theories of soil mechanics in a clear and straightforward way; combining both classical and critical state theories and giving students a good grounding in the subject which will last right through into a career as a geotechnical engineer. The subject is broken down into discrete topics which are presented in a series of short, focused chapters with clear and accessible text that develops from the purely theoretical to discussing practical applications. Soil behaviour is described by relatively simple equations with clear parameters while a number of worked examples and simple experimental demonstrations are included to illustrate the principles involved and aid reader understanding.

In 1633, Galileo was found guilty by the Holy Inquisition for publishing his observations that the earth is not at the center of universe, that not all heavenly objects revolve around our planet, and that earth moves by a double motion. The old astronomer was convicted and had to spend the remaining years of his life under house arrest. One would think that more than 370 years later, humans would have learned a lesson from that historical event. Unfortunately, that is not the case. New ideas substantiated by observation are rejected with vehemence without any substantive reason. Yet all the time, our species continues to kill other humans with abandon. Our excuses seeking to justify these liquidations are based on antecedents finding their genesis in the history of a nomadic, mostly illiterate people. The Grand Design puts forward discoveries made in the last 100 years or less providing a rational explanation for our irrational behavior. The book concentrates on two major areas. The first deals with the discovery that the human forebrain consists of three separate cortices. Each one has its own behavioral/psychological imprints finding its origins many millions of years ago. The oldest part of the brain - the basal ganglia - has its origin in dinosaurian ancestors. It now becomes easy to understand why much of human behavior is controlled by the territorial imperative. Neither gods nor devils are responsible for our deeds. Once we understand that our brain's dichotomy is responsible for our misbehavior, perchance we will assume responsibility for our acts and raise the merely human to the humane. The second part of The Grand Design deals with erroneous assumptions by some of thegreatest thinkers in the world's history. I.e., both Plato and Newton embraced a firm belief in polar absolutes. That concept also underlies a substantive part of the biblical tradition. Quantum mechanics points out that uncertainty, rather than polar absolutism, is the reality of our world. While The Grand Design deals with complex issues, the author has been able to simplify the results of the research and presents them in an understandable manner. The main problem with reading this volume is not caused by the difficulty of the ideas but with the brain's embedded behavior to reject new concepts. Yet, unless we shake off erroneous assumptions, we will continue the blood baths, the social inequity, and the economic injustice that have colored our history.

The science and practice of memory come to life with Bennett Schwartz' Memory, Second Edition. Integrated coverage of cognitive psychology and neuroscience throughout the text connect theory and research to the areas in the brain where memory processes occur, while unique applications of memory concepts to such areas as education, investigations, and courtrooms engage students in an exploration of how memory works in everyday life. Four themes create a framework for the text: the active nature of learning and remembering; memory's status as a biological process; the multiple components of memory systems; and how memory principles can improve our individual ability to learn and remember. Substantive changes in each chapter and 156 new references bring this new edition completely up to date and offer students an array of high-interest examples for augmenting their own memory abilities and appreciation of memory science.
