Most of the Nag Hammadi texts originated in the 2nd and 3rd centuries. They form one of the most important manuscript rediscoveries of the 20th century, and their importance for Biblical scholars and Church historians in particular can hardly be overestimated. This volume presents the first complete German translation of the approximately 50 Nag Hammadi texts as well as the Berlin Codex 8502 as an affordable paperback.

English summary: John Chrysostom, born in Antioch around 350 AD, was a keen exegete of Paul the Apostle and his scriptures, and prior researchers used the terms love or kindred spirit to describe his relationship to Paul. A linguistic and historical analysis of the epithets used for Paul reveals the staging of the Apostle as an ideal ascetic. In his study, the author shows how Chrysostom kept ascetic standards alive by putting Paul in the limelight of the Christian communities of Antioch during the struggle with the Syrian-Antiochene ascetics. The analysis of epithets used for Paul in previous ancient Christian literature and in the works of Chrysostom sheds light on the consistencies and innovations of this staging.

English summary: Christoph Markschies shows that ancient Christian theology must always be seen with a view to its specifically institutional context. Thus the canon of biblical writings is not only of varying length in the works of the apocalyptists, free teachers, in the school of Origen or in the various liturgies, it also has different functions. The author begins with a description of these various institutions and then uses the biblical canon to explain those characteristics of a theological concept which unite and those which differ. The book is built around studies of the idea of theology and an application of the answers to the age-old question related to the unity and plurality of ancient Christianity.

English summary: The theme of this book is to explicate the statements about envy in the Gnostic myths in the light of their historical, cultural, and political context, as well as of the self-understanding of the Gnostics. For this purpose, the present author takes up several significant motifs, which constitute the Gnostic myths, and surveys the function of envy-motifs in the myths. In the Gnosticism in the Syro-Egyptian lineage, envy plays quite an important role for the plot development. Envy is one of the principal constituents in myths. Also, psychological-mythological parallelism (der psychomythische Parallelismus G. Theissen) makes it possible to demythologize the Gnostic myths: that is to say, the Gnostics overcome their envy and recover their original way of envy-free being. In their political context, it turns into the exchange of roles: namely, the Roman Empire which subjugates the Gnostics under its strong government is now assigned the role of envier (Jaldabaoth in the Gnostic myths), while the Gnostics play the role of being envied as Kingless tribe or as The True Kings. But they turn away from the actual political activities. In this sense, the occidental Manis make a clear contrast with the Syro-Egyptian Gnostics, since they vigorously participated in political activities. The present author thus clarifies the mythological basis that enabled them to take part in the political activities. It is the structure of their soteriological myths that brings about the difference in their political activities. Two elementsuthe soteriological principle (by which the Gnostic myth is constructed) and the life attitude (which includes political posture)uare inseparably interrelated. Through these theses, the present author further demonstrates Max Weber's fundamental propositions in sociology of religion.

This is the most complete, up–to–date, one–volume, English–language edition of the renowned library of fourth–century Gnostic manuscripts discovered in Egypt in 1945, which rivaled the Dead Sea Scrolls find in significance. It includes the Gospel of Thomas, the Gospel of Mary, and other Gnostic gospels and sacred texts. This volume also includes introductory essays, notes, tables, glossary, index, etc. to help the reader understand the context and contemporary significance of these texts which have shed new light on early Christianity and ancient thought. This team of collaborators launched modern Gnostic studies and exposed a movement within Christianity whose teachings are in many ways as relevant today as they were centuries ago. The importance of their work has been underscored with the success of books by bestselling authors such as Elaine Pagels, Harold Bloom, and even Dan Brown. Opening the secrets of a religion which the Gnostics themselves had hoped would be kept sealed until the Last Day, this edition takes into account recent developments including the significance of the Gospel of Thomas and other lost gospels as a source of the authentic sayings of Jesus. This fascinating collection will become a welcome addition to the understanding of the formative years of the early Christian Church.

St. Thomas’s Gospel is one of the most hotly debated documents from Early Christianity. No other piece of extra-canonical scripture has given rise to such controversy about whether it presents Jesus’ message in a more original and less theologically sophisticated form than the New Testament Gospels. The papers collected in the present volume give an insight into the present state of research and demonstrate new perspectives on the question of the status of the various texts and traditions of St. Thomas’s Gospel in the history of religion.

Gnosticism was a wide-ranging religious movement of the first millennium CE—with earlier antecedents and later flourishings—whose adherents sought salvation through knowledge and personal religious experience. Gnostic writings offer striking perspectives on both early Christian and non-Christian thought. For example, some gnostic texts suggest that god should be celebrated as both mother and father, and that self-knowledge is the supreme path to the divine. Only in the past fifty years has it become clear how far the gnostic influence spread in ancient and medieval religions—and what a marvelous body of scriptures it produced. The selections gathered here, in poetic, readable translation, represent Jewish, Christian, Hermetic, Mandaean, Manichaean, Islamic, and Cathar expressions of gnostic spirituality. Their regions of origin include Egypt, the Greco-Roman world, the Middle East, Syria, Iraq, China, and France. Also included are introductions, notes, an extensive glossary, and a wealth of suggestions for further reading.
