On the Shoulders of Giants

The Post-Italianate Edition

With playfulness and a large dose of wit, Robert Merton traces the origin of Newton's aphorism, "If I have seen farther, it is by standing on the shoulders of giants." Using as a model the discursive and digressive style of Sterne's Tristram Shandy, Merton presents a whimsical yet scholarly work which deals with the questions of creativity, tradition, plagiarism, the transmission of knowledge, and the concept of progress. "This book is the delightful apotheosis of donmanship: Merton parodies scholarliness while being faultlessly scholarly; he scourges pedantry while brandishing his own abstruse learning on every page. The most recondite and obscure scholarly squabbles are transmuted into the material of comedy as the ostensible subject is shouldered to one side by yet another hobby horse from Merton's densely populated stable. He has created a jeu d'esprit which is profoundly suggestive both in detail and as a whole."—Sean French, Times Literary Supplement

Taking his title from a saying of the French philosopher Bernard de Chartres that "even dwarfs on the shoulders of giants can see farther than them," the author offers a brilliant new reading of the history of psychoanalysis. Roberto Speziale-Bagliacca exploits Sigmund Freud's fundamental stature, but rejects the common belief that "orthodox" psychoanalysis begins and ends with its founder. The author attempts to "see farther" than those who deny the advances and radical epistemological ruptures that have enriched and modified psychoanalysis after Freud. He also rejects the presumptions of those who condemn Freud for having "missed" much that only today is held to be true in psychoanalytic theory. In the author's view the relatively slow development of new ideas in psychoanalysis is traceable to what he terms "closure"-the narrow authoritarianism with which Freud's and his first followers protected the validity and basic outline of his method. Aware that a new approach to the understanding of the Freudian revolution means challenging this authoritarianism, Speziale-Bagliacca analyzes three chapters of the history of psychoanalysis to test its resilience: the Eissler-Roazen controversy over the suicide of Freud's pupil Victor Tausk, the case of the Wolf-Man analyzed by Freud, and the personality of Jacques Lacan and its influence on his writing and teaching method. In each instance, the author demonstrates how psychoanalytic knowledge runs the risk of becoming a closed system, a sort of secret society. To Speziale-Bagliacca, Freud is not infallible, but his "dethroning" must be conducted with courage, honesty, and an awareness of the inevitable anxiety that such an operation imposes. "On Freud's Shoulders "is an authoritative work on the complex ways in which psychoanalysis can look at its history and improve its therapeutic approach.

The information you didn't learn in medical school!A marvelous and amusing read...memorable anecdotes...I defy you not to laugh out loud. --ENT NewsWant to get a step up on the competition? This is the book for young doctors trying to bluff their way into erudite otolaryngological circles by giving the impression that their ENT education was not wasted. Knowledge of trivia about a particular subject always gives the impression that the holder of this useless information is also privy to other facts which are just too mundane to mention. While everyone in the field may know what Gradenigo's Syndrome is, you will impress your colleagues by knowing just who Gradenigo was! With Offbeat Otolaryngology, you'll also learn these valuable pearls of wisdom: Inspiring confidence in othersIt is not necessary to know Latin, but merely to give the strong impression that one has forgotten it.- The historical meaning of medical termsRhino, as any reader of Billy Butler will know, is an old term for money and many allege it is from this that the tem rhinoplasty derives.- Public health issuesDuring the late 1960's, the rate of coronary heart disease in Finland was very high and thought to be associated with the high milk intake which was found there, most Finns drink a pint or two of milk instead of beer with their evening meal. The Finnish government accordingly put a health warning on milk.- Other medical specialtiesResearch has shown that anesthetists were the chaps who at school had their mittens tied together through the arms of their duffel coat. Our psychiatric advisers tell us that this is a form of insecurity and, like most things in life (according to them) dates back to early childhood and the fear of rejection by or loss of their mother. As doctors, they fear losing the attention of their patient are not really happy unless he is anesthetized and will not run away.- And many more!Learn the fun facts and information you missed in medical school the magic and romance behind acoustic neuroma; madness and anesthesia; famous tracheotomies; the history of nasal polyps; and so much more. Finally, a medical book that makes you laugh! Offbeat Otolarngology is the book you will avidly read at every break, use in speeches, and amuse your friends and colleagues.John D C Bennett is an intensely shy and private individual who spends most of his time wondering why he has ended up where and what he is. Mathematics is the only science with a methodology based upon deductive logic, whereas physics is a quantitative science based upon experiment and observation in which trial and error are inherent. Physics uses the most relevant mathematics, for example using group theory to explain the theoretical basis for the crystalline structure of solids, an illustration of how, time and time again, a mathematical theorem perhaps developed by a Greek philosopher is relevant to today's newly developed physics proof. On the Shoulders of Giants investigates the relationship between the disciplines of physics and mathematics and shows how many of the most significant advances of 20th-century physics rely on mathematics developed, sometimes much earlier, with no particular physics application in mind. Quoting from mathematicians such as Poincaré and Euclid and physicists such as Newton and Feynman, the links between the two disciplines are explored in the author's entertaining style, providing a fascinating account of the twists and turns in scientific progress through the ages. Challenging, stimulating, and questioning, the book explains how the uncanny ability of formal and abstract mathematics can interpret the properties of the physical world. Using a wide ranging set of examples, it illustrates the manner in which mathematics has been applied to physics and even points to directions for future research. The book discusses how to fill space without leaving gaps; Euclidean geometry, its limitations, and the bending of space; the laws of musical harmony, sound vibrations, and the confinement of electrons in solids; how to tile a floor efficiently; Newton's Laws of Motion, chaos, and the weather; group theory and garlic; the laws of chance; route-planning in Konigsberg with Euler; the rules that turn bath bubbles into suds; the shape of soot; and the Schrödinger equation and why a pendulum can never stop. Requiring some prior knowledge of physics and mathematics, this well-illustrated book will be of interest to all readers with an interest in physics and mathematics, in learning more about the role of mathematics as the formal language of physics, and in how physics and mathematics have influenced scientific research.
