This book is an updated and revised version of the Oxford Chemistry Primer entitled Periodicity and the p-Block Elements. In addition to having updated and substantially rewritten parts of the first book, the most obvious change is that certain aspects of s-block element chemistry are now discussed explicitly and so this group of elements are therefore included in the title. The author has sought to provide an overview of some of the important trends (periodicity) found in the properties of the s- and p-block elements and the compounds that they form, and to provide the reader with some simple "rules of thumb" whereby they might appreciate and better understand these trends.

This succinct text outlines the main classes of transition metal organometallic complexes and introduces the reader to the chemistry of compounds with metal-carbon s-bonds: metal carbonyls, metal alkyls, and metal alkylidenes and alkylidnes. The synthetic methods leading to each class ofcompounds are illustrated with pertinent examples, followed by the discussion of characteristic structures and reactivity patterns. The aim is to allow undergraduate students a quick overview over this area of chemistry. Highlights and excursions stress general principles and relate the materialto specific applications such as catalytic processes.

All the basic principles of the field of aromatic chemistry are clearly presented in this important account. Many compounds of industrial and biological significance are used as examples with consideration given to structure, reactions, and properties. Topics such as thermodynamic versus kinetic control and pericyclic reactions are also introduced. In addition to benzene and the classes of aromatic compounds derived from it, the text covers polycyclic arenes, and the small and large ring systems which are embraced by the wider definition of aromaticity. The text will be especially useful for courses in organic chemistry.

The carbonyl group is the commonest functional unit of organic chemistry and a thorough understanding of its reactivity is fundamental for organic synthesis. It appears in many classes of compound, of which aldehydes, ketones, and carboxylic acid derivatives are the most important. This Primer covers the chemistry of these classes within an up-to-date mechanistic framework which embraces reactions with simple nucleophiles (hydration, acetal formation, and condensation with aminonucleophiles); enols and enolates; and their reactions with electrophiles, including alkylating agents and carbonyl groups. Core Carbonyl Chemistry is central to organic chemistry and will be invaluable to students taking chemistry or biochemistry courses at University.

It has been recognised for many years that power ultrasound has great potential for uses in a wide variety of processes in the chemical and allied industries. Reported applications include cleaning, sterilisation, flotation, drying, degassing, defoaming, soldering, plastic welding, drilling, filtration, homogenisation, emulsification, dissolution, deaggregation of powder, biological cell disruption, extraction, crystallisation and, more recently, as a stimulus for chemical reactions. With the increasing use of power ultrasound in chemistry comes the need for specialist text books covering this emerging discipline. This book is suitable for chemists and chemical engineers at all levels who wish to gain a rapid insight into what is becoming a standard method in the chemical laboratory. It is designed to answer the following questions: What is sonochemistry? Why is it important? What systems are affected by sonochemistry? What are the major applications of this technique? What types of ultrasonic equipment are available? How do the different types of equipment compare? How is the equipment best configured for chemical applications? What parameters can be changed to optimise sonochemical results? What equipment is available for the scale-up of sonochemistry?

The fern-like patterns of frost on a cold window, eroded landscapes, and particles grown in an aerosol all have forms that are conventionally regarded as irregular, with little or no symmetry. In this book the reader is introduced to the fractal dimension, a concept that unifies the description of such diverse and irregular objects and implies that they all possess a new form of symmetry. The growth of these different objects is controlled by similar simple processes; descriptions of simple experiments that will bring the principles involved to life in a modestly equipped laboratory are also provided. The relevance of fractal concepts to the structure and chemistry of porous solids, and to the growth of polymers and colloids in liquid and gaseous phases, is emphasized within this concise text.
