Awarded second place in the 2017 AJN Book of the Year Awards in Psychiatric and Mental Health Nursing. "I welcome, at long last, a book on global mental health targeted to nurses, the front-line health worker for billions of people around the world.? The roles that nurses can, and should, play in mental health care are diverse and this book addresses both well-trod as well as emerging concerns across the continuum of care from promotion to prevention to treatment. Importantly, at the heart of this diversity is the foundation of compassion and care, the hallmark of the nursing profession." – Vikram Patel, Professor of International Mental Health and Wellcome Trust Principal Research Fellow in Clinical Science, Centre for Global Mental Health, London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, UK Psychiatric disorders have consistently been identified as serious and significant global burdens of disease, yet meeting the needs of people in mental distress has not often been a priority in health care. This important reference work sets out the knowledge base for understanding the state of mental health care globally, and translating that into effective practice. The Handbook provides a historical and contemporary context of mental health care, identifies and discusses evidence-based standards of care and strategies for mental health promotion and explores the need to deliver care from interdisciplinary and community-based models, placing these imperatives within a human rights and empowerment framework. It is made up of four core sections which look at: Key and emerging issues that affect global mental health practice and research, including the social context of health; Evidence-based health promotion strategies for major areas of practice internationally; A range of country studies, reflecting different problems and approaches to mental health and mental health care internationally; and What constitutes empowering practice. The only comprehensive work looking at global perspectives on mental health nursing, this is an invaluable reference for all students, academics and professionals involved in mental health research with an interest in global or cross-cultural issues.

Featuring brilliant art, engaging new case studies, and dynamic new teaching and learning resources, this 9th edition of Porth’s Pathophysiology: Concepts of Altered Health States is captivating, accessible, and student-friendly while retaining the comprehensive, nursing-focused coverage that has made it a market leader. The book’s unique emphasis on “concepts" of altered health states, as opposed to factual descriptions of diseases and disorders, helps students grasp both the physical and psychological aspects of altered health. Drawing on the expertise of new co-author Sheila Grossman, the Ninth Edition maintains its comprehensive depth, while paring down content where appropriate and replacing descriptive content with striking art. (Approximately 600 illustrations are new or have been re-rendered in a consistent modern style.) Also new to this edition are advanced 3D narrated animations that address the most clinically relevant and difficult to understand disorders, engaging unit-opening case studies that reinforce critical thinking and set the tone for the content to come, and a wide range of built-in study tools. Now, for the first time, Porth’s Pathophysiology is supported by PrepU, an adaptive learning system that help students learn more, while giving instructors the data they need to monitor each student’s progress, strengths, and weaknesses.

The fifth edition of Psychiatric–Mental Health Nursing maintains a strong student focus, presenting sound nursing theory, therapeutic modalities, and clinical applications across the treatment continuum. The chapters are short and the writing style is direct in order to facilitate reading comprehension and student learning. This text uses the nursing process framework and emphasizes assessment, therapeutic communication, neurobiologic theory, and pharmacology throughout. Interventions focus on all aspects of client care, including communication, client and family education, and community resources, as well as their practical application in various clinical settings. This new edition is supported with an ancillary package designed to assist instructors with course planning and execution, and student evaluation, and to assist students with comprehensive knowledge synthesis. ORGANIZATION OF THE TEXT Unit 1: Current Theories and Practice provides a strong foundation for students. It addresses current issues in psychiatric nursing as well as the many treatment settings in which nurses encounter clients. It discusses thoroughly neurobiologic theories, psychopharmacology, and psychosocial theories and therapy as a basis for understanding mental illness and its treatment. Unit 2: Building the Nurse–Client Relationship presents the basic elements essential to the practice of mental health nursing. Chapters on therapeutic relationships and therapeutic communication prepare students to begin working with clients both in mental health settings and in all other areas of nursing practice. The chapter on the client’s response to illness provides a framework for understanding the individual client. An entire chapter is devoted to assessment, emphasizing its importance in nursing. Unit 3: Current Social and Emotional Concerns covers topics that are not exclusive to mental health settings, including legal and ethical issues; anger, aggression, and hostility; abuse and violence; and grief and loss. Nurses in all practice settings find themselves confronted with issues related to these topics. Additionally, many legal and ethical concerns are interwoven with issues of violence and loss. Unit 4: Nursing Practice for Psychiatric Disorders covers all the major categories identified in the DSM-IV-TR.
