The Merchant Navy in the Battle of the Atlantic 1939-1943
Author: Richard Woodman
Publisher: Pen and Sword
For the British, the Battle of the Atlantic was a fight for survival. They depended on the safe transit of hundreds of convoys of merchant ships laden with food, raw materials and munitions from America to feed the country and to keep the war effort going, and they had to export manufactured goods to pay for it all. So Britain's merchant navy, a disparate collection of private vessels, became the country's lifeline, while its seamen, officially non-combatants, bravely endured the onslaught of the German U-boat offensive until Allied superiority overwhelmed the enemy.??In this important, moving and exciting book, drawing extensively on first-hand sources, the acclaimed maritime historian Richard Woodman establishes the importance of the British and Allied merchant fleets in the struggle against Germany and elevates the heroic seamen who manned them to their rightful place in the history of the Second World War.

Little is known about Walter of Coventry (fl. 1293) beyond the fact that this substantive historical compilation was prepared either by him or under his direction. Published in two volumes as part of the Rolls Series in 1872-3, it covers the kings of Britain from Brutus to Edward I, with its latest datable event being the Anglo-Scottish agreement of 1293. Although the overwhelming part of the Latin text is drawn directly from such sources as Geoffrey of Monmouth, this is no mere transcript. Editor William Stubbs (1825-1901), Bishop of Oxford and perhaps the leading historian of his day, describes the annals of the reign of King John (which are included here in Volume 2) as 'one of the most valuable contributions in existence to the history of that eventful period'. Stubbs's preface to this volume offers a rich and extensive 'sketch' of John's character and reign.
