“A big sprawling novel of the West as it really was.” —The Denver Post A dying Indian woman gives birth to a white man’s son under a pitch-black prairie sky. In the basement of a Kansas brothel, a husband tends the furnace while his wife services the clientele upstairs. A preacher’s mute daughter chases after a broken kite, paying no heed to the dangers lurking underfoot. An Englishman and his humpbacked guide track a phantom white buffalo from the Mississippi River to the Rocky Mountains and back again. A saga as rich and complex as the history of the American West, Heart of the Country bursts at the seams with unforgettable characters and stunning imagery. Tracing the epic journey of Joe Cobden, a hunchback born on the side of a stagecoach road and raised in the genteel home of a St. Louis doctor, across the vast and unforgiving landscape of the Great Plains, author Greg Matthews exposes the savage truth behind the frontier myth and captures what it was really like to live and die in the Old West. An enthralling adventure story that combines the poignant realism of Larry McMurtry with the gothic imagination of Stephen King, Heart of the Country is a masterpiece of historical fiction.

This fourth title in a unique series that combines reference and analytical qualities in chronicling the horror and science fiction genres, Horror and Science Fiction Films IV brings the earlier three volumes in the series up to date, concentrating on the period from 1984-1994, as well as updating entries from the previous volumes and adding newly-discovered titles from 1900-1983. Entries in the main list include credits, cast, synopsis, and annotation. The introduction lists 1995 releases in the genres and 1996 releases through the summer, cites the more memorable films in the genres for both the current period and 1900-1984, and serves as an index to key titles in the main list, including long-lost titles such as the -obscure silent Were Tiger and the 1931 The Phantom. Willis includes many films from around the world that are not found in any other English-language film reference work. One appendix provides thumbnail descriptions of problem and peripheral films; another updates entries in the first three books with alternate titles; and a third appendix serves as an index to the approximately 7,000 films listed in the first three volumes in the series as well as in the current volume, thus bringing the total number of films covered in this series to roughly 11,000 titles.

Star Wars begins with its famous title sequence, setting the story in the ancient past of a remote galaxy. Yet the phenomenal success of the film, the franchise, and its “expanded universe” is based upon its reflection of historical and cultural milieus here on modern-day Earth. This collection of new essays examine various ways in which George Lucas’s saga touches upon contemporary social and political issues. Topics include the impact of the film’s score on musical genres, feminism and NASA, the epic mimicry of Western-African and Bedouin cultural motifs, gender identity construction, Cold War narratives in radio and national mythology, and fan interpretations of authorship and authenticity.
