Many people today are writing about and seeking to understand the concept and practices of leadership. There are a great many reasons for the popularity of the topic, including the fact that organizations are faced with challenges like never before. Some of these challenges might include the ability to align the organization to better support the mission or upgrading technology to enhance production. Nevertheless, the concept of leadership is relevant to any aspect of ensuring effectiveness in the marketplace for organizations and in managing change. This book represents my experience of 25-plus years of supervising, managing and leading folks in the public sector (military and Federal government), learning about strategic leadership in the military and more recently, my doctoral program. It centers on strategic leaders, the essentials that are needed for them to be effective and successful in organizations. It argues that the strategic leader must use the competencies of strategic leadership to influence the future environment, technology, processes, structure, strategy, and the workforce with the understanding that these are just some of the components that affect the successful operation of an organization.

Today we need a new type of leader. As we enter the fourth industrial revolution, we need leaders with the wisdom to address new ways of working, to make positive change in the world. One of the key premises of Mindfulness-Based Leadership is that leadership is about being, not becoming. We make a bigger difference by looking within ourselves than by striving to become what we are not. While mindfulness has often been perceived as a solitary activity, this book reveals how it is applicable on a wider scale – in groups, businesses and the wider community. Mindfulness-Based Leadership shows us how to balance self and organisational goals, to erase the real and imagined internal conflicts between what we believe in and what we do in reality. Mindfulness expert Kathirasan K presents a unique 56-day course on Mindfulness-Based Leadership. Each day introduces a new facet of mindfulness – through guided introspection, acceptance and mindful practice – illuminating the ways in which we can unlock the leader within ourselves.

Go to any bookstore and browse through the books on leadership and you will find thousands of definitions of a leader. One will say that leaders face adversity with fortitude; another will say that a great leader conducts effective and productive meetings; another will say that leaders have virtue, ambition, or imagination. But you and I have seen people in leadership positions who are incredibly smart, others who manage meetings with great finesse, and others who have mastered important skills, but yet cannot command a following. We have also seen people who have none of those traits and yet have tremendous supporters. So what is it that makes a leader a leader? This book will reveal that secret.

The move to multidisciplinary teams in primary care and the emphasis on joined-up working across the human services make it increasingly necessary for health and social care professionals to take on a variety of leadership roles in teams made up of people from different professional backgrounds. This sort of leadership requires different skills from those required when working in the context of a single profession familiar to every member of the team. In Leading Interprofessional Teams in Health and Social Care, the authors use detailed case-studies to explore these skills. Nurses, social workers and other health and social care professionals, specialists and managers are included in the case-studies to demonstrate how leadership and teamworking roles can be taken in different ways and in different circumstances. The final section of the book presents an analysis of the case-studies to draw out the key issues and discusses how readers might develop themselves to be successful leaders and team members in these diverse settings.

Questioning the Unquestionable to Think the Unthinkable and See the Invisible One thing that used to make me uncomfortable and bother me when I was growing up was that when I looked around almost everybody was like everybody else, doing what everybody was doing, making the same jokes, thinking thoughts that everybody was thinking, heading in the same direction; for example, I would see five small kiosks selling the same things on the same street. When someone started a business, a dozen others would start doing the same thing; my view was that everything looked to be at standstill, and I used to question this deep down in my heart and that still bothers me till today because nobody is supposed to be like nobody: I used to go to boarding school, stay, come back, and still find nothing has changed nothing different, no progress. In fact, it looked like things were moving backward; this used to depress me. Nothing changes in our life until we change. This does not mean that change cannot happen unless we do; there is a certain type of external change that happens even if we do not; for example, your body changes with or without your permission. Environment change is another example; however, unless we change things can never change in our lives. You see, if we keep on thinking the same thoughts doing the same things like the past generations did, we will not move forward but be at a standstill, and the problems with history repeating itself is that it teaches us what we have already seen and takes us to where we have already been and to see what we have seen.

Energize Your Leadership began as a collaboration among a group of leaders who met online with a dream to write a book about ways to ignite individual leadership. We came together around stories and experiences that had one theme in common: leaders were feeling sapped of energy. Somewhere along the way, these leaders had lost a sense of excitement—that feeling of being alive that powers everything you do. Some of us saw it in the workshops we were facilitating, others heard it from coaching clients; many of us noticed it in leadership at the organizations we worked at. No stranger to the phenomenon ourselves, we found that each of us had also experienced a moment or period of lack of excitement and energy. Wherever it was, we heard time and again how leaders were feeling overwhelmed, disengaged, and were searching for meaning. We saw that leadership was in need of a potent dose of energy. The focus of the book is to understand how energy is a key driver for our individual leadership success. Since energy is the force that propels and moves things forward, when we become energized, we feel empowered to lead with passion and resilience. Our approach to exploring leadership is to journey from the inside out, so leaders first grasp who they are and what they stand for before connecting to and influencing others. It begins with an authentic look at oneself and moves outwards to touch the lives of those we encounter in our personal and professional worlds.
